Tackle Football

Mason took a shot at tackle football this fall, and had a great time playing! He had some tackles, saw a lot of playing time, and even caught a touchdown pass! So proud of him for trying something new. He says he will play next year in high school…

{Mason’s TD catch. Jacob happened to be working on the sideline feet away from the play and caught it on video!}

Colorado Getaway

We took a quick weekend trip to Colorado to celebrate Aunt Marlene’s 90th birthday. She’s a personal favorite of mine ever since I met her more than 20 years ago, so I was excited when we had a reason to make the trip to see her!

We took the last flight out of O'Hare on Thursday, an unusual airport for us as we typically take Southwest out of Midway. We ended up in parts of the airport I didn't know existed, and passed by planes that were boarding nonstop to Dubai with the most beautifully dressed flight attendants draped in authentic headdresses. Plane tracker Mason even got to see a one-of-a-kind aircraft parked at a nearby gate.

{A bit more space age than the O'Hare we are used to!}

Speaking of space age...
{It was determined on the shuttle ride to the airport that Mason has a doppelgänger.}

A late night flight meant lots of sleeping kiddos around me. Taking pictures of my sleeping babies will never get old.

The whole family then met up in Littleton where we rented a cute house as our home base for a very fast 80 hours!
{This is Barry. I'm not sure who he belongs to or if Barry is his real name, but he was a friendly pup and was the kids' +1 for the majority of the weekend. While on a very dog-populated hike, Jacob suggested that we should have brought Barry along...}

When in the Denver area, it is imperative that I carve out time to catch up with Jenni, so I did! We spent Friday together hiking around Red Rocks, telling stories, and laughing until tears were pouring down our faces. Our friendship lights up my soul! Our families caught up with us at her house where we burned the rest of the day in a flurry of activity, laughter, and conversation. Watching our kids pick up right where they last left off is a special bond that I love to watch. It was a dream day!

{The scenery was almost as perfect as the company!}

{The moment Jenni and I were "discovered." A random lady with a professional camera interrupted us while we were enjoying our picnic lunch. We were having a hard time sorting through her thick accent, so when she was describing the beautiful scenery, we thought she wanted us to get off the rock so she could take a picture. Turns out she wanted us in the picture because she liked how the backs of our bodies looked against the backdrop. After she took our picture, we asked that she take one for us with the front of our bodies facing the camera...}

{Love this group! Cam and Gi were plotting a sleepover, and Mason asked at least a dozen times if we could just go back to Jen's house one more time. And, yes, my boys are exactly the size they look!}
{Re-creating a picture that Jenni and I took a million years ago when we were probably about 3 years older than our girls are now!}

Before they headed my way, Caleb and the kids spent some time hiking and fishing in a Colorado stream. Details indicate that the kids only lasted a few minutes before they had enough. En route to the car, Camryn and the girl cousins rode on some dude's horses in a parking lot. Completely unplanned. Somewhat creepy. But if Uncle Scott says it's OK, then throw caution to the wind, I guess!
{The big guys fished for the majority of the day. That is the *one and only* fish Caleb caught. Zoom in if you have to. We are so very thankful that we don't rely on Caleb to catch our nightly meals...}

On Saturday morning, Caleb and I took a walk down the street to Columbine High School where we were able to see the memorial in place for the victims of the 1999 shooting. We talked about how perspectives of events change with age and experience. We were seniors in high school when the shooting happened and were both, admittedly, self-absorbed, which made processing the events a near impossibility. But now, as parents with a high school student, the reality of it all hits a little harder.

As luck would have it a solar eclipse was also happening on that mostly sunny Saturday, and Colorado was in the direct path. Mason—who couldn’t manage to pack sneakers—packed our eclipse glasses so everyone was able to view the 80% total eclipse!

Then off to celebrate Marlene with a lunch party! The thing about parties is that conversations become difficult, so I was so happy when we were able to hang out at her house for a few hours the next day and enjoy each other’s company.

Sunday was the one day with no planned activities, so we traveled down to Garden of the Gods and hiked a few trails. While beautiful, it was slightly disappointing after having seen Arches last summer. Jacob and I agreed that when in Colorado, one must focus all hiking within the beautiful stream-lined forests of the Rockies. But being able to see something for the first time is still a great experience, so I am glad we made the trip.

On the way back to Littleton, we stopped at the Air Force Academy where Mason was able to see an alternative way to break into the flight industry. Seems like a no-go for him, but he did walk away with a souvenir t-shirt.

Up early to catch an 8:20 flight on Monday and back to sport activities by mid-afternoon. The world keeps turning!

Cross Country

Mason decided he wanted to join his school’s Cross Country team for the first time ever and also on the last day he could join. I assumed he wanted to chase after a girl, but he denies that. I’m still not sure his motive, but the season wrapped last week and I will say that I am more than mildly impressed by his running talent.
En route to his first race, Mason mentioned to me that he didn’t think he had ever run two miles in a row before. I concurred, and immediately determined this sport was going to be a waste of parent cheerleader energy, time, and logistical planning, but I digress.
He had lots of PRs and lots of not even close to PRs—mostly because “I just wasn’t feeling it today.” His words. But across the course of the season, Mason started out at 14:40 for two miles and wrapped with a PR of 13:08 and a 21st place overall finish when running against the seven district middle schools. Not too shabby for a kid who clearly just started running two miles in a row a few weeks ago.

Spectating this sport is very different than the sports I am used to as people are running all over the place to catch up with their runners at different points. My stance: stay put and watch Mason go by twice. I will say that this sport is the perfect length for those with short attention spans, lack of interest, and/or things to do as the whole process takes less than 20 minutes and you can get about the rat race of other kids’ after school activities.
I wasn’t thrilled when Mason added another sport for our family to juggle, but it was *mostly* fun watching him grow as a runner. Great season, Mason!

Cheerleading

Camryn has finally joined her first organized sport of her choosing--competitive cheerleading. She LOVES it! It comes as no surprise that she is a flyer, and she has learned so much in the few months that she has been doing it. She practices four hours a week, with an extra 3-hour long practice twice monthly. It's a huge time suck as the gym is roughly 30 minutes away from our house, but she wanted to be serious about it, so here we are. Competition season will be ramping up next month--I have already booked rooms at the Dells and in Indy. Her team is expected to qualify for Florida in April, so I guess we could be traveling to Disney at some point as well. Spectators are not allowed at practice except for scheduled drop-ins, so it will be exciting to see the routine her group has worked so hard on!

When not at cheer practice, Camryn can almost always be seen in our family room choreographing routines, tumbling, using stools as her bases, and tossing around her stunt flyer "Maddie"--an apple juice jug half-filled with water. Her dedication and imagination impress me daily!

September Bits

{Jacob's football pictures. Those flowing locks are looking a bit windblown and his adult XL jersey is looking slightly off kilter...}

{Mason's head has been popping up around our house. It makes me laugh every time!}

{Camryn went to a fall festival with one of her besties. I learned about their adventures on Snapchat. I still don't know how to use that app...}

{Jacob went to HOCO with some buddies. I got exactly zero details from him when it was over, but he said it was a really fun time. So glad that the weather was amazing for the dance (on the football field) and fireworks finale!}
