The Great Blanket Debate
For the past few nights Jacob has woken up crying because he is cold (at least that is my best guess). And last night I decided the only solution was to tuck one of his blankets around him. It did the trick and within minutes our little guy was sleeping like a--well--baby. And within minutes I realized I couldn't sleep because I was certain that Jacob would find a way to strangle, suffocate, or in some other way hurt himself with this bulky, unsecured blanket. Four hours and dozens of well-being checks later, and it was morning. We both survived our first night sleeping with a blanket (Jacob did better than me), but I am still trying to decide if my paranoia is just part of the I'm-a-first-time-mom syndrome, or if it would be more appropriate to jack up the thermostat to a steamy 90 degrees to avoid blankets altogether. Any thoughts?

Are you already doing socks, long sleeves, etc? If so you might try one of those "wearable blankets". I would be doing the exact same thing you were: freaking out. I think I'm going to buy the wearable blanket for the winter. They have them in the "One Step Ahead" catalog but I'm sure you can find them online.
He is already sleeping in footed PJs AND a long-sleeve sleep sack. But when he wakes up crying he is curled up in a tiny tiny ball, so I'm taking that to mean he is cold. And when I pick he up and hold him next to me he falls right back to sleep. Who knew a blanket could cause so much stress?!
Halo sleepsacks. They even make them with footholes so older kids can walk.
I know it probably isn't too hard for you to believe (after all, I did put you to sleep on your stomach from birth)but you slept with a blanket and you are still here! It was a receiving blanket size (no, I did not throw a queen size blanket in your crib). Hey, you older mothers--help me out! (or am I alone here???)Thank god I was so uniformed--I worried myself sick as it was!
I agree, Gma Sally! I worried about so many things! (still do) Who knew there were so many more things to consider/freak out about?! I guess I would probably go with the sleep/wearable blankets since that is the advice today...

I used blanket sleepers, over pjs, for both girls. (they were fleece long sleeved bag sleepers for infants & footed for toddlers). I used them because I like to be warm when I sleep and blankets seemed impractical in a crib. (another bed to make - ugh!). It never occurred to me that my babies might suffocate - how blissfully uninformed I was!
Halo Sleepsacks. $20 on Amazon.
Harper uses a blanket and has for a while. I was nervous at first, I would let her fall asleep with it and then take it out. Now she sleeps with one all night.
My toddlers have gone to bed iwth more than one blanket, but you will find they aren't really covering up with them...just snuggling (which is fine once they can lift their heads), but if he is cold you'be got some options...another layer, socks, or the sleep sacs. We actually had a small (non-electric) space heater in the boys room when they were little it would come on at 2 am and shut off at 5am, but just long enough to take the chill out of the room and not roast out the rest of the family.
