I'm no June Cleaver, but I do try to keep a clean house. And now I am on the hunt for the perfect vacuum cleaner. The one we currently have has served us well for the past several years, but now that Jacob is mobile I have found myself cleaning a bit more obsessively than in the past and our vacuum just can't keep up. So what should I get? Upright or canister? Bagless or conventional? Any specific brand that stands up the best to dog hair, cheerios, and dirt? Does spending more money really get a better product? Do you absolutely love, love, love your vacuum? Suggestions welcome!

Ours isn't fancy, but we have a Bissell Momentum. It's upright and I love that you empty the canister. And, as gross as it sounds, I love watching what it picks up through the clear canister. Makes me feel like it's really doing it's job. I would love to get the new roller Dyson. Sweet!
Love my Oreck upright. It is lightweight but a bit noisy. Great 'sucking' power, if maintained properly.
I have a Eureka something, its crapping out after only a few years, so I'll be checking back here to see what to buy!
I prefer a canister but I think it is because that is what I grew up with. I have owned both kinds. I never feel like the upright gets close enough to the molding but the upright is easier to store.
Hmmm, I need Christmas gift ideas...would you kill me if I buy you a vacuum cleaner!?! I promise not to purchase one until the reviews are all in!

Dyson all the way!
Whole house vac is the only way to go!!! it can be installed to an already existing house we've done it.
I waited for a Kohl's coupon and used it to buy a Dyson. It's the best vacuum we've ever owned--it gets all of the animal hair and doesn't lose suction. We have 3 cats, one longhaired, and burned through two vacuums in as many years before this one. Or I should say, my husband burned through 3 of them. I don't vacuum, as I have asthma and the stirring up of dust is no good for me. The Dyson sucks the cat hair out so well that even though I'm allergic to cats, they don't bother me.
I want to agree with Robyn about the Dyson. I have used hers when we are down there and it is wonderful. It gets the dog hair up like magic. Wish I had one:)
